The historic Billings and Spencer building in Hartford, CT began as a tool forge over one hundred years ago manufacturing beautiful drop iron wrenches. It has since been converted to apartments and is owned by the Melville Charitable Trust. Billings Forge Community Works, established by the Trust, is a non-profit organization dedicated to serving the residents of Billings Forge and starting innovative programming aimed at sparking revitalization and investment in our Frog Hollow neighborhood. The Farmers’ Market at Billings Forge, which began in 2007, is one such program. The market aims to provide our residents at Billings Forge with access to fresh, unprocessed foods and to draw new people and life into Frog Hollow. The 2008 Market ran Mondays and Thursdays from May 22nd to October 30th in a new location: closer to Capitol Ave. on Broad St. in the grass courtyard on the north side of Firebox Restaurant. New additions in '08 included more vendors, more prepared foods, and picnic tables for lunch time seating. As in 2007, there was live music to help make the market an enjoyable event. The Farmers’ Market at Billings Forge is Hartford’s biggest farmers’ market. Our farmers and food artisans come from all over Connecticut to sell their fresh and delicious goods direct to the consumer. In addition to produce, fruits, and flowers we also feature excellent breads, dairy including locally made ice cream, pastured beef, pork, and eggs, jams, pickles, soaps, and locally roasted coffees. The market also features a rotating array of artists and craftspeople. Please visit our Vendors page to learn more about the families, artisans, and entrepreneurs who join us every week. The Farmers' Market at Billings Forge accepts EBT/Food Stamps, credit, and debit. We are the only market in Hartford to do so and are confident that this service will be enjoyed by those coming to the market in search of the best fruits and vegetables Connecticut has to offer!
